Style pop art in the interior

13.09.2018

Pop art interior is instantly recognizable, irreverent, always bright, bold and rarely tasteful design. It became the main style of design and artistic direction of the late 50's and 60's. The main distinguishing features of this style were the use of modern materials, screaming tones, newspaper clippings, a combination of works of art with elements of folk and decorative creativity.

History of pop art style

Pop art is an artistic direction that takes its roots from the 50s. The prefix "pop" comes as a result of the abbreviation of the word "popular", which, in the literal sense, is translated as art for the masses.

This unusual style emerged and actively developed in the UK and the US, as a reaction to abstract expressionism. The main attention was paid to constant changes, diversity, fun, rebellious mood, bright colors and mass consumption.

At first glance, it was a cynical, careless nod in the direction of the classical understanding of art, but, in fact, everything turned out to be much more serious. In the era of social and political turmoil, the feminist movement and the propaganda of free love, pop art became a way of self-expression, it gave the opportunity to cheerfully communicate their ideas to a large number of people.

The largest autumn exhibition of The World Goes Pop shows a huge number of works from around the world, and not only British and American artists who have become a symbol of this movement. After all, pop art is designed to show how visual techniques of pop culture can be used to solve various social problems, ranging from war and censorship, ending with a release from the usual framework and traditions.

The most famous works in the pop art style of those times were: the collages of Robert Rauschenberg, which combined oil painting and clippings from magazines; Large-format comedies by Roy Lichtenstein; the works of Jasper Jones, James Rosenquist and, of course, Andy Warhol.

Features of pop art interior

As for the use of pop art style in interior design, it is possible to distinguish several main characteristic features:

1. Wall decoration

The walls in pop interior are usually bright and combine different colors and patterns. One of the most popular solutions is when one wall remains white, the other two are painted with contrasting colors, and the fourth has a repeating pattern.

Typical for pop art is painting the walls in different colors. It is possible to use the technique of a smooth transition from one shade to another, as well as strong contrast.

2. Light

Pop art focuses not only on contrasts, but also allows experiments with them. Art-effect is a play of light and shadow, as well as creation of various optical effects that are of great importance for achieving "pop" style.

Neon lights, LEDs, unusual lamps and lights play an important role in the formation of pop interior. Also, you can create interesting lighting effects using mirrors.

3. Textiles

Pop art design involves the use of artificial materials. Textiles are used everywhere - for curtains, as upholstery for furniture, for decorating walls and ceilings.

Here you can not limit your imagination by choosing bright, acidic shades or fabrics with large patterns. The only thing that the texture is preferable to choose a simpler one so that it does not overtake attention.

In our catalog there is always a large selection of interesting textiles that will help emphasize your unique design.

4. Furniture

In the same room can use objects of different shapes, regardless of style and function.

Furniture in pop art is unusual and very memorable. Usually, round, fancy shapes in the style of "retro futurism" are used. Often in the design there are female silhouettes, characters from cartoons and images of celebrities.

As a rule, cabinets are not used in pop-art style, so as not to clutter up space. It is better to replace them with niches, built-in wardrobes and even podiums. For clothes is best to organize a wardrobe.

5. Bright, repeating decor

Pop art is characterized by the use of repeating elements in the decor: posters, paintings, carpets with geometric patterns. Also popular are various stylized plastic accessories: watches, photo frames, figurines, vases and lamps. In such an interior, the use of unusual, evocative decor elements, for example, luminous plates, a pink toilet bowl or a table lamp in the form of Superman, will be welcomed.

6. Paintings and posters

The main element of pop art interior, most often, are huge large-format photos, paintings and posters, which depicts the symbols of Coca Cola and Campbell, as well as faces of celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Mao Zedong. Also enlarged versions of clippings from comics are used.

Pop art style is a challenge to "good taste". This design does not recognize the routine and neutrality. He is called upon to declare the individuality and uniqueness of his owner.

Of course, this style is not so common in the design of home interiors. But to create interesting art spaces, it will fit, as it is impossible, better. Yes, with the help of "pop art" it is difficult to create a cozy home atmosphere, but to decorate the interior of an office or a cafe that will carry the social idea to the masses - it's easy!
