Types of defects in upholstery fabric

25.04.2018

We decided to dedicate this article to such an unpleasant topic as the presence of defects in furniture fabric.

This very important and sensitive issue for furniture production, oddly enough, is poorly lit  of the Internet. We decided to fill these gaps and frankly talk with you about what others are afraid to tell.

First, let's get acquainted with the terminology.

A defect is each individual nonconformity of production to the established requirements. In the textile industry defects are considered to be non-fibrous inclusions and defects of appearance: lack of basic and weft yarns, interlacing, printing and finishing defects, etc.

All defects can be divided into the main types and criteria.

For example, defects on furniture fabric can be divided into:

Explicit defect is such a defect, for the detection of which in the normative documentation that is mandatory for this type of control, appropriate rules, methods and means are provided.

Defects found in the course of cutting, production, as well as during the operation of furniture can be attributed to hidden defects in textile materials.

By the degree of significance of the defect on the furniture fabric, it is possible to identify such species as:

Critical - a defect that makes it impossible to further process and operate the fabric.

Significant - a defect that affects the quality of the fabric and the timing of its operation, but is not critical.

Minor - such tissue defects that do not significantly affect the cutting and use of tissue.

Further, we will give you examples of defects and fabric flaws that you may encounter.

One of the main classes of tissue defects is the bending of yarn and yarn. Such a flaw occurs when using insufficiently high-quality raw materials for upholstery production.

1. Crossed  is a alternating thick and thin sections in the yarn. The occurrence of such a rejection is possible, in the event of an improper operation of the extractor of a roving or spinning machine. As a consequence, the fabric has banding and not an equal degree of color.

2. The formation of loops on the canvas is possible in the case of winding yarn, due to very large twist or weak tension.

3. Lumbago is the lack of one or more basic threads on a certain area of the fabric. Such a fault occurs due to the breakage of the warp yarns during the weaving process in case of malfunction or stoppage of the machine.

Defective sites with a length of not more than 2 cm are allowed in 5 locations per roll. On invisible tissue sites these defects are not taken into account.

4. But the fabric on which, as a result of the malfunctioning work of the machine tool and other mechanical influences, holes, holes, and perforations - are considered to be a flaw and not allowed for further use in products.

5. Another defect in the malfunctioning of the tufted machine can be pile bald patches, which are formed from uneven pressing of the surface of the fabric to the pile surface. As a consequence, we get a cloth with uneven pile around the perimeter, and in the worst case, a completely different texture from the sample.

The next class of defects in furniture models can be identified those that arise as a consequence of non-compliance with staining technology or equipment malfunction.

1. So the spots that have arisen even during the bleaching stage, can be sharply manifested during dyeing. In addition, when dyeing textiles, stains can form due to the accumulation of dirt on the dye rollers of dyeing machines, as well as from the dropping of water during steaming.

2. One of the most common problems in textiles is a variety. Such a defect is characterized by a difference in the tone of the furniture fabric from the sample. The acceptable norm of a variety from batch to batch is 6%.

3. However, there is a variety not only between the parties, but also during one roll. Such a defect is called variegatedness. It is formed because of the unequal degree of pressing of the shafts during the plugging or because of the uneven pouring of the paint into the bath of the plus. In this situation, it is worth to carefully consider the opening of the fabric, because usually the variability becomes noticeable already in the finished product.

4. The next common defect in the furniture fabric is banding - these are stripes along or across the roll of varying color intensity, arising from the heterogeneity of the raw materials used, as well as the unevenness of the yarn tension in the torsion and weaving processes.

All of the above defects can manifest themselves in different intensities, depending on the type of tissue and its color.

And lastly, we want to dispel a few myths about the flaw of furniture fabric:

1. All tissues eventually burn out with constant exposure to direct sunlight. And this has nothing to do with the flaw of the fabric. Moreover, artificial fabrics are more resistant to sunlight than natural ones.

2. If possible, periodically turn over and swap the cushions on the couch, this will ensure their uniform wear and increase the service life. Take into account that in the process of exploitation wear from 15 to 20% is the norm. However, not following this rule, you risk getting smudges, dents and pilling on the couch.

3. Velours, microfiber, suede can have a different shade, depending on the angle of light and the direction of the pile. This property of the fabric and is not factory flaw.

4. Contrary to popular belief, tissue pilling is just the reaction of furniture to the external effects of other materials and is not at all a marriage. In this case, the furniture fabric does not differ from sweaters, coats, carpets, etc. The best way to get rid of it ugly lumps - to remove them with a razor. At what, be prepared for what will hold several times until the final disposal of pilling.

5. Well, and of course, the manufacturer can not be held responsible for improper cutting, production and care of the fabric. Adhere to all the care recommendations that we give for each collection, given its features, and you can extend the life of your furniture.
